The CTA, Pace, Metra and RTA all face a major budget deficit. The growing operating budget gap will be over $750 million by 2026 for the region's transit agencies. The Illinois legislature must put forth a sustainable funding solution by the end of its spring session this May to avoid service cuts and fare increases at catastrophic and unprecedented levels.
If left unaddressed, the CTA, Metra and Pace could face dramatic cuts, including major lay-offs, route or line eliminations, service cuts, station closures, and cancellation of capital improvement projects. These drastic measures would put communities at risk, will further damage the region’s transit systems, and cause massive disruptions to the Illinois economy and workforce.
